How it works

This typing test teaches the standard 2-set Korean keyboard (두벌식) from scratch and then measures how fast you type. Consonants are on the left half of the keyboard and vowels are on the right, so Korean typing has a natural left-right rhythm.

The six levels

  1. Home row: ㅁ ㄴ ㅇ ㄹ ㅎ on the left hand and ㅗ ㅓ ㅏ ㅣ on the right. These are the most used letters, so start here.
  2. Top row: ㅂ ㅈ ㄷ ㄱ ㅅ and ㅛ ㅕ ㅑ ㅐ ㅔ.
  3. Bottom row: ㅋ ㅌ ㅊ ㅍ and ㅠ ㅜ ㅡ.
  4. Syllables: letters joined into blocks like 가, 문 and 할.
  5. Words: everyday words from the vocabulary themes, with their meanings.
  6. Sentences: short, useful sentences like 커피 한 잔 주세요, with translations.

How speed is measured

In Korea, typing speed is counted in 타, keystrokes per minute, not words per minute. 한 takes three keystrokes (ㅎ ㅏ ㄴ), and a compound vowel like ㅘ takes two. This test counts the same way, and only counts keys that end up correct. As a rough guide from our own testing, under 100 keys a minute is a beginner, 200 is a comfortable everyday pace, and 300 or more is fast.

Tips

  • Keep the "Highlight the next key" hint on at first, then turn it off once you know a row.
  • Look at the screen, not your hands. It feels slow for a day, then you speed up quickly.
  • Accuracy first: a slip costs more time than typing a little slower.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Korean typing speed?

Korean speed is measured in keystrokes per minute (타). Around 100 is typical for a beginner, around 200 is a comfortable everyday pace, and 300 or more is fast. Native speakers who type all day often go well beyond that.

Do I need to install a Korean keyboard?

No. The test turns your regular keys into Korean letters using the standard layout, and you can tap the on-screen keyboard on a phone. If you already have Korean installed on your device, that works too.

Why does my speed count keys and not words?

Korean words vary a lot in length, so Korean typing tests count keystrokes. One syllable is two to four keystrokes.

What is a slip?

A slip is each time you press a wrong key and have to go back. Accuracy compares correct keys with slips.
